I Heart My Job.

So I was looking at a reading comprehension exercise with a student, hoping to also give her a little more info about wild animals in Canada.

Me: Do you know what these animals are?
A: Deer are…deer. I know. But not elk. Or caribou.
Me: They are also kinds of deer. Caribou are like reindeer, but bigger. (I holod my hand about three and a half feet off the ground)Elk are really big. (I hold my hand out about four and a half feet high) About this big.
A: That big? Why don’t we ride them?

Totally good question. I, for one, would like to tame and ride an elk.

I also would not mind that: elk, unlike horses, look like real animals without evil intentions to me. Ah. Phobia.

Arwen, you are sooo fired! Elk are just as large and oddly formed as horses. If we went around riding Elk as the norm, you’d probably be just as freaked of them. An average bull weighs 700 pounds, stands 5 feet at the shoulder, and measures more than 8 feet from nose to rump.
I do agree that they are sort of pretty in the big antlers covered with velvet kind of way, but they are also prone to CWD (Chronic wasting disease).
    ....Here Elky, Elky!

Pomo, how’d you get to be an elk expert?

    You slay me.

It doesn’t matter how, it just matters that I’m right.

    The internet is fun

Also plus, other freaky Elk facts!

Presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy were all Elk. Former President Gerald Ford belongs to Grand Rapids Lodge No. 48, where his father served two terms as EXALTED RULER.

Entertainers Lawrence Welk, Will Rogers, Jack Benny, also Elk, and Clint Eastwood is a member of Monterey Lodge No. 1285. William F. Cody, aka “Buffalo Bill,” was also a Brother Elk, but I guess “Elk Bill” wasn’t as snappy a name. From the sports world, the likes of Vince Lombardi, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Jim Finks were all considered to be at risk for Chronic wasting disease too.

Although I don’t think I’d like to ride any of these Elks either.
