LinkMania: Things I haven’t been writing about (abridged list)

So… life’s been a little weird lately, and I stopped posting my “Everything I bookmarked todays” lists, but I’m still here.

Here’s some things I’m not writing about.

  • My mom’s health.  Happy thoughts towards speedy recovery, mmmmkay dear readers?  KayThanks.
  • Our firstborn son going to school in a week (didn’t we give him to someone as payment for something, already?)
  • June’s 2nd Podcast (was going to do August’s Cover/Prince double-barrel show, but mom went back into surgery again, ’cause she seems to really enjoy DOING THAT, and so I drove out to the ‘wack to go see her afterwards.  I sang my guts out while driving out there, does that count?
  • Itty bitty motherboards.
  • James Brown WISHES he could jam with these guys. (unplugged, too)
  • Sharing your wifi (without giving away your WEP/WPA keys), and getting same from others.
  • Why I was using a computer to play Adventur when I was SIX on the mainframe at Queen’s (bonus points: why I heart encrypted communication so very very much).  Mom must’ve been singing me to sleep with this stuff…
  • Some weird band from Holland I might like, if I heard more.
  • I should have watched more of those load screens and DEMOES on my C64, I might’ve become an artist instead of a techie…
  • How would I say it?  How would YOU say it?  How would they say it?
  • Yummy, yummy Steampunk.  (Oh, and Arwen and I are going to see William Gibson talk ’bout his new book at CBC Radio 1.  How Canadian/Nerdy can we GET?)
  • Videos that’re just a bunch of people dancing aren’t new…  neither’s choppy editing to make up for visual narrative.
  • Bears – Beets – Battlestar Galactica: Top 10 Scenes from the Office
  • Straw + Ink + Drawing in Monster Bits = Good.
  • Slipping Firefox past people who prefer Vista’s black glass looks.
  • Tie someone to a tree with their own feet.
  • Lipogram: Story of over 50,000 words without using the letter “E” (etc)
  • Pretty.  Weird.  Pretty/weird.
  • Photography, and eco stuff, with nerdiness and alsoplus – can Burning Man Go Green?
  • The guy who droplifted the fake Parrots Hilt’n cds with titles like “Why am I famous” and “What have I done?” does all SORTS of other art.
  • Future Sound of London has come full-circle, and is doing what Kraftwerk used to: Breaking stuff, rebuilding it, and making it make noise.
  • Korea:Breakdance:Beatboxing:Turntablism… Kickin’ the Pachebel Cannon OLD SCHOOL.

Oh, and Ripley and I are gonna go see K-OS.

WORD.

Tennis Player vs. Soccer Player? That’s *my* idea!

Nifty video from Nike Momentum (drum circles cause adrenaline, who knew?) via the often interesting and always well-written How Advertising Spoiled Me.

In the video, stars (it’s Nike, they can afford it – I’m surprised they don’t have them breakdancing), are squaring off, sorta, and you end up with tennis players slamming a ball at a soccer player, etc.

And I called it about a two years ago.

’cause I wanna see a game that places the sports against each other.  The game’ll need some serious play-balancing, and would be a pain in the butt to do physics for, but after watching this little video, I’m thinking it’s time to check my idea in, since it’s got at least the first wave of questions and “yeah, but”s answered.

So watch out, Nike Commercial People, you’re on notice.
{Speaking of being “On Notice,” the Stephen Colbert “On Notice” Generator is gone, sad.}

So, after the main drive on our server decided to pack it in after only six years of:

  • running on a sad little Pentium III 733
  • Windows 2000 server (and IIS, ’cause they said it couldn’t be DONE)
  • not enough air flow
  • multiple power surges and outages
  • three different low-profile power supplies
  • a warm day combined with the door on the cabinet sealing shut

the drive made this horrific clicking noise when attempting to boot.

Now thanks to

  • some SERIOUS drive recovery karma (I think I’m around 95% on over 100 drives in my carreer: freaky, huh?)
  • Arwen‘s CompSci degree
  • blind faith to KEEP TRYING even after you’ve already consciously accepted that everything’s gone
  • backups I started on a daily/weekly/”otherdrivetarget” back in February

72hrs later, we’re back up. New hardware, new server OS, new everything. NEW.

Same ol’ data though, which is the new sweetness.

Arwen, Monkeypants, Pomodoro and I are all back.

So, “Temple” is in ruins, and “Blackhole” is here to stay, we hope.

Email/comment (if you can) if there’s any weirdness.

Oh, and Email’s not *quite* back up just yet, so Monkey and Pomo are not emailable at this domain for the next little bit.

Windows Live Writer Test 2 (Electric Oops-Undo)

I’m running into an autosave bug that acts more like a “save and revert” of some sort.  It’s BRUTAL to be typing for five minutes, rest for a second to think about what you want to say next, and then watch it clobber most of the last paragraph and replace it with some earlier text.

I was doing a little post just now, to give it another chance, and it LOST THE POST I was typing, even though it seemed to think everything was just peachy.  Ctrl-Z to undo?  It put back the last word I had deleted.

Niiiiiiiice.

I think I’ll stick to wBloggar for now.

Also, I found A Softer World via Karlababble:

So, what, is it working as a post thing?

Here’s me testing Microsoft’s new Windows Live Writer, and so far, I gotta say, there’s some pretty amazing things it’s doing right outta the box:

  • It downloaded and installed in about 30 seconds (no activation, no stupid link/login things.
  • It’s doing live spell-check as I type.
  • It’s doing an auto save every three minutes (Arwen’ll like that).
  • It’s showing what I’m writing using the style-sheet from my own blog, so I know what the layout is, and how it’s going to look ON MY BLOG. (Sorry Facebook, and LiveJournal, you’ll be stuck with whatever happens during translation).
  • {Uh, randomly deleting the word I was typing *right* before it autosaved?  Hullo?}
  • Allegedly can do pictures and things like that there, so we’ll just have to see about that, won’t we?

Okay, that’s enough of that.  Daily Show is on.

Oh, and everyone think good thoughts about my moms, mkay?  She’s in hospital with a thing, and we’re all happily pretending we’re not scared poopless.

{Okay, wtf? The autosave is actually REVERTING to what I was typing a little while ago, th’hell?}
