I *think* the trackback is something that you put in your post when you link to another person’s story (you find something interesting, so you put their trackback URL in your post (in the trackback field) so their Blog knows you’re linking to them (or at least referencing them). The Pingback is what your blog will do when another site trackbacks to you.
It’s all so confusing.

In fact you don’t put the TrackBack url in you post, you send it via a form to let te server know that your post is about the other’s person story.
