Thursday the 13th

I must be doing something right, I’m getting more spam in my filters in the last week than I have in the last year.

Found out something cute today, as a sorta followup to something fun Arwen found out a few years back.  When she was doing some research for her degree, she was reading something about “Sniffer” programs (used to watch/capture network communications), and came across a German article talking about “Shnuffleprograms,” and we had a good giggle about it.

I mentioned it to someone at work who speaks German, and they pronounced it for me.  It’s even cuter than Arwen and I originally thought.

It’s pronounced “Shnewfil-program.”

We had a fire at work today.  Let me rephrase that slightly.  We had smoke at work today.  Seems someone on the floor above us didn’t entirely extinguish their cigarette before chucking it into a “hole” in the rooftop patio, which started some stuff smoldering, which would occasionally send little puffs of smoke into our server room on the floor directly below the patio.  Thank god it wasn’t someone’s last smoke of the day before heading home at 5:30, or I might not have a building to go to tomorrow.

I’m thinking our budget for disaster recovery just got green lit.

I’m also thinking the 5th floor company will be having a new rule starting tomorrow about smoking on the patio.

A good Vancouver moment came when one of the firemen was trying to start a pull-string chainsaw for about two minutes, and finally got it going, which caused a few hundred of us to have a spontaneous round of good-natured applause.  How freakin’ Canadian is that?

Another great thing was the moment immediately after the alarm was pulled, watching a co-worker of mine snap people out of their “Oh geez, is the alarm gonna stop in a minute, or what?” stupor with this awesome “THIS IS REAL PEOPLE” yelled clear across an open floor full of people.  She’s gonna make a great mom.  I wonder if all the kid-sister types from Ohio have that same internal bullhorn if they need it?  I hope they do.

Also, it seems I’m a sap, as the recent Sirius Satellite Radio “Discover Music Again” made me tear up.  I keep thinking I’d like to try satellite music, y’know, but there’s *probably* not much more on satellite than there is on the net (130 stations on Sirius, compared to “One Per Person Who Wants to Be A DJ” on Shoutcast), but the main thing is that I don’t have TIME to listen to music any more.  I don’t have two hours of commute a day to listen.

Oh, and while it’s fuzzy (taking pictures into the fridge without a flash is not my forte) the repetition of “Saputo Fetos Feta” makes me giggle every time I say it.

Say it! SAY IT!

Say it! SAY IT!
